Nexgen Introduces Year 2000 Testing Tool for AS/400

ScreenPlay Simplifies Year 2000 Application Testing

Naperville, IL – April 20, 1998 –Nexgen Software Technologies, Inc. announces the availability of ScreenPlay, an AS/400 tool which speeds up the Y2K testing effort. The tool complements all date conversion tools and approaches, including Nexgen’s leading Y2K product, Focus/2000.

Testing is one of the most critical elements of the Year 2000 conversion process. The creation of detailed test scripts is very time consuming and the actual testing process demands users who are experienced with the applications they are testing.

ScreenPlay is used to create detailed test scripts prior to Y2K conversion. Users initiate ScreenPlay before beginning each of their normal AS/400 application processes (such as creating customer orders, processing invoices, or reviewing inventory allocations). The tool automatically captures every screen in the processing flow, with no intervention needed from the user. If there are any century date failures during the process, these are captured and recorded as a matter of course. At the end of the application process, the ScreenPlay test script is saved, stored online, and cross-referenced with up to three sort values.

Once the Y2K conversion is completed, testers, using these test scripts as the model for their Y2K testing, play back the script in one AS/400 session while exercising the converted application in another session. Testers are able to verify that: (a) the converted software works just like it did before and (b) all century-date issues have been corrected. An added bonus is that the testers need not be experienced users of the applications they are testing, since the test scripts walk them sequentially through all of the application flow steps.

How is this possible? When a ScreenPlay recording session is started, each screen is automatically recorded into a file. In addition to screens, all associated spooled files can be included in the test script as well. Once captured, the complete scenario can be edited with notes, played back, printed, exported to a PC document (with all display attributes), archived as a save file, or broadcast to other AS/400’s.

Besides Y2K testing, ScreenPlay can also be used throughout the organization for computer-based training, to create user manuals, and to document procedures for ISO9000 certification.

Availability and Pricing

ScreenPlay is available now. Pricing for ScreenPlay is based on the size of the AS/400 processor. Prices start at $7,800.
